Major plans to transform former Dunnes store in Glasgow into 112-bed hotel withdrawn

Major plans to transform the former Dunnes store on Sauchiehall Street into a 112-bed hotel have been withdrawn.

Qtel One Ltd had asked Glasgow City Council for permission to convert the old department store in August last year.

It had intended to open its first Qtel “budget boutique” hotel, with a café, restaurant and bar.

But the council’s planning portal has now been updated to show the proposal has been pulled.

The Yorkshire-based company, part of the Manor Property Group, had been planning to invest £12m and create 50 full time jobs.

Mark Bailey, a director at Manor, had said: “We have identified hotels as a key area for development.”

The company has been approached for comment about the withdrawal. Companies House shows Qtel One Ltd changed its name in October, to Westpark Homes Limited.

Glasgow-based Mosaic Architecture and Design was acting as the agent for the applicant and, when the application was submitted, said the project would help to “reinvigorate” the famous street.

The Art Deco building, once home to the C&A department store, went on sale in 2018 and was marketed by CBRE. Dunnes, the last occupier, closed its store in 2017.

Plans for the hotel were submitted last year, with work scheduled to begin during this year and a proposed opening in 2021.

In a representation to the council, Iain Wotherspoon, from the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, said it was an “interesting proposal for a property which has been empty for some time” but added the “proposed mansard type roof covering the two top floors creates a ‘top heavy’ look”. The society asked for this element of the plans to be altered.
