Major plans for new slip roads and underpass at A1 near Queen Margaret University put forward

Plans for new slip roads and an underpass at the A1 near Queen Margaret University have been put forward.

The proposed changes to the road, which have been formally lodged by East Lothian Council, would allow major development at the university to go ahead.

At the moment the only way to get to the university is on the A1 eastbound, heading from Edinburgh towards East Lothian, but the new slip roads would create access from the westbound carriageway. An underpass would be built beneath the main road and a new roundabout to the west of it.

More than 116 hectares of land surrounding the university and A1 is set to undergo major development with 1500 new homes, a university innovation hub, business and commercial spaces, a primary school and public spaces all planned.

It is believed the innovation hub could create up to 1000 new jobs in the area, however it has been accepted that access from the A1 will need to be improved as a result.

Drawings of the A1 proposals have been lodged by East Lothian Council with its own planning department.

East Lothian Council added: “Until due planning process is complete we cannot advise on costs and timescales.”
