Major plans for iconic Bristol music venue would see basement turned into art gallery

Major new plans for an iconic Bristol music venue would see its basement repurposed as an art gallery and acoustic venue.

The Louisiana, which currently operates as a pub and gig venue on Wapping Road, has applied to Bristol City Council for variations to its licence, which would see it play films and recorded music into the late hours of the evening.

Mig Schillace, who owns the pub, says the plan would be “to host acoustic events and also double up as an art gallery” as the pub tries to be “even more inclusive” with the Bristol community.

The licence application on the Bristol City Council website reads: “The premises is a family run world famous music venue which includes a bar and restaurant area and is repurposing the basement as an art gallery/acoustic venue.”

The pub has applied to show films from 10am to 11pm Monday - Saturday, and to play recorded music and serve late night refreshment from 11am to 1am Monday - Saturday.

It has also applied to sell alcohol from 10am to 12.30am Monday - Saturday, and 10am to 10.30pm on Sundays.

Mig Schillace told Bristol Live: “The plan would be to host acoustic events and also double up as a gallery. In the past we have hosted events for UWE art students.

“We are also planning on upgrading the recording studio that is there at present to provide a cheap recording space for musicians.

“We are pushing to be even more inclusive with our community.”

It comes after the cherished venue was saved from closure, having had its revenue stream pulled from under its feet when lockdown hit.

Major acts who have played at the pub over the years include Keane, who were signed there, Muse, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse and Mumford & Sons.
