Major phase of Strand roadworks nearly completed but another to come

The first phase of a huge revamp of one of Liverpool's most important roads is nearly complete - but there is still a long way to go on the overall project.

The development of The Strand, the city's iconic waterfront route, has been ongoing for some time and has been causing huge frustrations for drivers who have regularly found themselves in major traffic jams.

The £22m Strand work is part of the wider £47m City Centre Connectivity Scheme - the city council's controversial project to reimagine key city centre routes.

When completed, the project will see a lane of traffic cut in each direction in a bid to reduce congestion and improve safety and air quality.

New bike lanes and public spaces are also being created in the area, with a large number of trees already planted.

There is now some good news for those who have to regularly use the waterfront route, with the council confirming that the first phase of the two-part scheme is set to be completed next month.

This involves all the work on The Strand from its north end at Leeds Street all the way to the junction with James Street - opposite the Pier Head.

The council said that by mid-October, all work on this stretch of the road should be completed.

However, there is still quite a long way to go on the overall project.

Phase two of The Strand revamp will see work taking place from the James Street junction to the southern tip of the road, at the Baltic Triangle.

The council is understood to be reviewing this phase of work at present and is expected to go out to tender in the coming weeks.

It seems unlikely that the second phase of work will begin until the new year - with hopes the overall scheme would be completed before the end of 2022.

The council confirmed that a temporary cycle lane will be created along the phase two area of the Strand, to link up with the completed, segregated lane that has been built in phase one of the scheme.
