Major parties battle it out in Pembroke poll as counting resumes

Liberal candidate James Walker may benefit from preference flows.

The results of the Pembroke by-election are expected later today, with the poll looking like a two-horse race between the major parties.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) has resumed counting after wrapping up last night with 84 per cent of the poll completed.

With most of the first preference votes counted, Labor's Jo Siejka is leading the pack with more than 32 per cent of the vote.

The Liberals' James Walker has 25 per cent and is considered the other frontrunner, depending on how the preferences flow.

Analysts believe independent Doug Chipman is very unlikely to win the seat with just under 20 per cent of the vote, leaving a two-horse race between the major parties.

The result will be known after preferences are cut up this afternoon.

If Labor does win, it will have four seats in the Upper House, leaving the Liberals with just one.

Mr Chipman, who is also the Mayor of Clarence, said on Saturday he was feeling quietly confident.

Many in the electorate jumped to the 71-year-old's defence when the Liberal Party targeted him in a negative campaign as being too old.

But the support has failed to translate into votes.

Mr Walker painted himself as the underdog while Ms Siejka said she had been out "talking to people" while the Liberal campaign was grabbing headlines.

Counting updates will be available throughout the afternoon on the TEC's website.

A result is expected to be known about 5:00pm.

The by-election was triggered by the illness and subsequent resignation of former Attorney General Vanessa Goodwin.
