Two new playgrounds were officially unveiled in the city on Saturday after new equipment was installed at parks in Mayfield and New Lambton.
Playgrounds at Dangar Park and Novocastrian Park were replaced in a $250,000 overhaul.
Dangar Park was expanded to include a new climbing frame and rocker as well as a larger swing set to replace the former set which suffered storm damage last year.
A rope climber, swings and a slide were also installed at Novocastrian Park. Basketball equipment at the park was also recently upgraded.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the playgrounds were becoming rundown and were in need of replacement.
The parks were officially opened on a busy Saturday morning, and Cr Nelmes said it was great to see the equipment being well used.
"The thing with playgrounds is build it and they will come," she said.
"I'm delighted these two playgrounds are ready for play.
"I think COVID really shone a light on the importance of quality local facilities that were accessible to everyone, that are within walking distance or a very short drive."
The upgrades were part of a $1.4 million program to upgrade playgrounds around the city in this financial year.
