Major objection to plans to build 11-storey office block beside Buchanan Galleries

A major objection has been submitted against plans to build an 11-storey office block and shops beside Buchanan Galleries.

The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland (AHSS) has written to Glasgow City Council to voice their opposition to the plans.

Their objection states that they believe the designs to be "excessive in height" - especially when located adjacent to a Category B listed building.

The AHSS is a national charity which studies, protects and celebrates Scotland’s wealth of historic buildings and environments.

As previously reported by Glasgow Live , the development will take in the southern part of the shopping centre and will see the new block built on top of the current Subway entrance on Dundas Street.

Planners have decided that the gap site should be used for high-quality office space rather than mostly shops.

However, the ground and first floor of the development would be reserved for retail space that would open out onto Buchanan Street. The rest would be offices.

The building would be accessed through a stairway that rises over the new Subway entrance and into a reception space.

Developers have said the building “will infill a redundant piece of the Buchanan Street ‘streetscape’ and potentially act as a catalyst for future regeneration; and, it will contribute to repairing the urban fabric and improve the physical environment in the areas in which it is situated."

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council.
