Major Notts road closed for second day after huge fire involving scrap metal in Newark

Fire crews are still at the scene of a huge fire involving 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal in Newark.

A plume of smoke could be seen towering over the town after the fire broke out on Wednesday April 17 at around noon.

Nine fire crews were originally sent to the scene, on the A616 Great North Road near to the British Sugar factory. The road remains closed.

Firefighters have been at the site all night and remain there this morning (April 18) and they continue to deal with the blaze. Around six crews are expected to remain at the scene.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews are still at the fire in Newark.

"Thank you for your patience whilst we continue to deal with this incident. The A616 Great North Road remains closed as the incident is still ongoing, so please avoid the area if possible."

Mick Sharman, incident commander, said they would be re-assessing the site this morning.
