Emergency services rushed to the M25 after a “multi-vehicle collision” forced the UK’s busiest motorway to close on Saturday afternoon.

A four-mile queue built up on the M25 anti-clockwise with delays of up to 60 minutes after the road was closed to allow an Air Ambulance to land and pick up an injured person.

The M25 clockwise between J23 and J25, which was also closed after the collision, has now reopened, National Highways East said.

“M25 is CLOSED anti-clockwise between J25 (Waltham Cross) and J23 (Potters Bar) due to a collision” the traffic organisation said in a post on X. In a previous post, it described the incident as a “multi-vehicle collision”.

After around two hours, National Highways East said three lanes had been reopened other than the outside lane where the collision had taken place. Half an hour later traffic flow was back to normal.

“The earlier collision has now been cleared Delays of approx. 10 mins, 2 miles of slow moving traffic remain on the approach,” National Highways said at 4:24pm.

National Highways East later confirmed that the injury was “not as serious as initially feared” according to “info from the scene”. It didn’t give any further information.

It advises all travellers to plan ahead before travelling on the motorway.

Late last month, a lorry overturned in the Surrey area of the M25, prompting travel chaos for motorists nearby.

Emergency services including Surrey Ambulance Service attended the scene, with dramatic pictures show a blue lorry on its side.

Weeks earlier, a section was closed near Heathrow Airport after a major crash involving a car and a lorry.
