Major Morriston street to be disrupted for weeks while roadworks carried out

A major street in a Swansea suburb is to be disrupted for 10 weeks as so-called "traffic calming measures" are installed.

Signs notifying the public of works at Woodfield Street in Morriston have been erected, which is one of the most congested roads in the area, flanked by food outlets and businesses either side of the road.

Swansea Council is doing the work in the hope it will help to slow traffic during the off-peak periods while building out pedestrian crossing points to improve the visibility of a "vulnerable group of road users".

Works are due to start on February 3 and continue until March 31.

In a letter to residents, the council said: "Analysis of the history of traffic collisions on the road have shown that in the most recent three-year period, there have been 13 traffic collisions involving pedestrians on Woodfield Street, including a fatality and a serious injury."

The work follows on from public consultation events which took place in November and December, where the scheme layout was finalised.

Traders said there was pros and cons to the roadworks.

Ava Rose, manager of Lextan, which is based along the road, said: "Obviously the road works are going to be a major issue for people trying to go in and out of Morriston and that could have an impact on shops and people's journeys up and down the street, but perhaps to slow down the traffic it will be a good thing all in all.

"I think (the traffic calming measures) are probably needed, Woodfield Street is a highly pedestrianised area and a heavily used road for traffic - it's constantly busy and there's constant parking.

"People do struggle and it will be a positive thing."

Kash Iqbal, who is manager of Rebel Vapes which is also based along the road, welcomed the move.

He said: "I think it's a good thing. There is far too much traffic outside and it is hard for my customers to park.

"There was an accident about two days ago where somebody was knocked over a bit further down the road. It's something that needs addressing.

"Yes there will be a bit of disruption but in the long term it should be better."
