Major London park forced to close as 3,000 flock despite coronavirus lockdown rules

A major London park has been forced to close because of too many people flouting coronavirus lockdown rules.

Brockwell Park in south London will be closed on Sunday because so many people flouted the Government's social distancing advice today, Lambeth Council said.

It tweeted: "Despite clear advice, over 3000 people spent today in Brockwell Park, many of them sunbathing or in large groups.

"This is unacceptable. Unfortunately, the actions of a minority now means that, following police advice, Brockwell Park will be closed tomorrow. Stay Home."

The council added: "We are sorry we've had to take this decision.

"This wouldn't need to happen if people followed the clear instructions from the Govt.

"We are doing this for the wider safety of the public. A minority of people have not followed the guidance - regrettably we have to act."

This comes after Victoria Park in Hackney was also closed as visitors ignored social distancing guidelines.

On March 25 a joint decision was made between Tower Hamlets council and the police to close Victoria Park until further notice.

A statement from the council posted on March 27 said: "While many visitors to the park were behaving responsibly and exercising individually as recommended, a significant number of visitors insisted on gathering in groups, holding picnics, drinking, sunbathing and playing football and team sports.

"These visitors ignored requests from our park and community safety teams to stop their activities.

"There was a consistent failure to both understand and adhere to social distancing guidance.

"When the crowds of people became unmanageable, our response was escalated to involve the local police.

"Other parks in the borough remain open for exercise, such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with.

"All visitors must maintain social distancing guidance and stay at least two metres away from all other visitors at all times."

The statement added: "Stay at home. Protect our NHS. Save lives."

Cassiobury Park's car park in Watford was also closed due to too many people travelling there.

Watford Council today tweeted: "In agreement with @HertsPolice we have closed Cassiobury Car Park (Gade Avenue) this weekend.

"The car park was full today and people travelling to park were putting other people at risk.

"Please do NOT drive to any parks, only use those local to you. Stay at Home, Protect the NHS."

The council confirmed the park itself has not closed.
