Major investigation after mass street brawl leads to road closure

An early morning street fight has led to the closure of a town centre road and two arrests.

Merseyside Police confirmed they were called out following reports of a brawl between a group of people in Prescot.

Atherton Street, just off the main A57, has remained closed for hours while forensic officers carried out an investigation of the scene.

Forensic investigators were seen crouching on the pavement in white suits placing evidence marker points on the ground.

They were also pictured taking evidence to scientific support vans stationed at the end of the road and taking pictures of various parts of the pavement and road.

Two men, both in their 30s, have been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm officers are today, Thursday, December 30, in Prescot town centre following reports of a disturbance involving a group of people.

"Officers were contacted at just before 7am to reports of fighting in Atherton Street.

"An investigation is underway and CCTV and house-to-house enquiries are underway to establish if anyone has been injured.

Two males, both in their 30s, have been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon and are currently in custody."

Anyone with information is asked to direct message Merseyside Police via their Twitter @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111.
