Major incident in Plymouth after ‘gunshots’ heard as air ambulances and armed cops race to the scene

A major incident is unfolding in Plymouth after reports of ‘gun shots’ and ‘loud bangs’.

Specialist firearms cops and air ambulances were sent to the scene in Keyham shortly after 6pm when the alarm was raised.

The ongoing situation has been described as ‘serious and tragic’ by MP Johnny Mercer who has urged members of the public to listen to police orders, Plymouth Live reports.

According to unconfirmed reports a gunman has been shot, Sky News reported.

One local MP said that the incident was not terror related and that there is not a suspect on the run.

South West Ambulance Service said in statement: "We were called at 18:12 to an ongoing incident in Plymouth.

"We responded to the incident with a significant number of resources, including Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), multiple ambulances, air ambulances, multiple doctors and senior paramedics.

"Several police officers and paramedics are at the scene this evening."

A large police cordon is in place stopping pedestrians from walking down a road.

Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth, said: "Really worrying news coming out of Keyham in Plymouth.

"Please can everyone stay safe, stay indoors and follow police advice."

In a longer Facebook post, the Labour shadow environment secretary said "there looks to be a very serious situation happening in Keyham".

"I've spoken to some local residents and the Police and the situation looks very serious indeed," he adds.

A nearby school sports centre has been told to close down with people indoors being ordered to leave.

Devon and Cornwall Police have been contacted for comment.
