Major incident declared as coronavirus case identified at Queen's University in Belfast Northern Ireland

A major incident has been declared at Queen's University in Belfast as one of two new Coronavirus cases in Northern Ireland was identified within its community.

The university said it was notified of the presumptive positive case by the Public Health Agency and are working to establish those the patient has been on contact with.

The total of number of patients with the flu-like illness has now reached three in Northern Ireland, Belfast Live reports.

Meanwhile four new cases of the virus were confirmed in the Republic of Ireland tonight. The patients, two males and two females had recently travelled from an affect area in Northern Italy.

A statement from Queen's University reads: "We have been informed by the Public Health Agency of a presumptive positive case of COVID-19 within the university.

"The university is working with the Public Health Agency to ensure that anyone who has been in contact with the infected individual is identified and supported to receive medical attention if required, and to take all appropriate steps to contain any further spread of the virus and to protect the welfare of all within the university community and the wider Public."

They said they university will operate as normal but will closely monitor the situation.

Online guidance is to be provided to staff and students.

They are also encouraging all members of the university to follow the latest PHA advice.

"The University's Major Incident team has been convened and is putting in place the appropriate contingency measures which will be communicated to staff and students when appropriate," they added.

The total number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus on the island of Ireland has now reached nine.

The four new cases in the Republic are in the west of Ireland health chiefs have said.
