'Major incident' at UK seaside as six children are rescued from the water

Six young children were rescued from the sea after a major incident at a beach in Wales, according to a coastguard team.

Port Talbot Rescue Service responded to reports of children being in “serious difficulty” in the sea at Aberavon Beach at around 8.30pm on Sunday 24 August.

Three children were brought ashore by coastguard rescue officers using a throwline in what was described as a “mass casualty water rescue” by the Port Talbot Coastguard.

The coastguard team said rescue officers recognised “the escalating danger” of the situation and entered the water, resulting in successfully bring the remaining three casualties to safety.

After thorough assessment and monitoring, the casualties were transferred to ambulance services for further medical evaluation.

Porthcawl Coastguard, Port Talbot RNLI Lifeboat, Welsh Ambulance Service and South Wales Police attended the scene.

Port Talbot Coastguard said: “This marks the team’s third water rescue this year, with nine lives saved to date.

“The dedication, courage, and professionalism of our Coastguard Rescue Officers continue to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to protecting our community and saving lives along the coast.”

They added that they wish the children a speedy recovery.
