Major Harry Kane World Cup fear for England as USA clash looms following Iran injury

England fans' hearts will be in their mouths and fingers will be crossed as Harry Kane has had a scan on his ankle following the 6-2 victory over Iran on Monday.

The England captain didn't score but got two assists as Gareth Southgate dispelled early tournament worries to take a resounding opening round win in Qatar - but it may have come at a cost.

Kane lasted 75 minutes in Doha and remained on the pitched despite his side being comfortably ahead at ahead at half-time and then took a blow to the ankle from Morteza Pouraliganji moments into the second half.

Kane played on before being replaced by Newcastle striker Callum Wilson. The Athletic report that a scan was needed to determine the extent of the injury after he walked out of the ground with light strapping to the ankle and a limp.

The Tottenham forward has had ankle injuries throughout his career, missing matches on five occasions due to it, with 20 games being lost in the process. Kane is chasing England's all-time goalscorer record for the tournament and will break Wayne Rooney's tally of 53 if he gets three more in Qatar.

After the game, Southgate said: "I think Harry’s fine. It looked like a bad tackle but he carried on in the game. We took him off because we felt it was a moment in the game we could do that.”

England face USA on Friday knowing that a victory will secure their passage into the last-16 with one games, against Wales, to spare.
