Major flooding and thousands plunged into darkness as Liverpool 'falls to bits in one night'

Thousands of residents were plunged into darkness and chaos last night after a sinkhole opened up in Liverpool.

Fire crews rushed to the scene of Green Lane after the 15ft sinkhole opened up, reportedly caused by a ruptured water main.

Shocking videos of flooded roads, homes and businesses were uploaded to Facebook with road closures still in place this morning.

“The incident has generated running water which is affecting the junction of Prescot Road 500 metres west and Green Lane 100 metres north,” the service said in a statement.

“Road closures are in place and several properties in the area are being affected.

“The suspected cause is a ruptured water main but this is not yet confirmed.

“Crews are working to restrict the flow of water and utilities companies are in attendance.”

Huge parts of the city were also plunged into darkness last night with Bootle, Everton, Norris Green, Anfield and Kensington just some of the areas affected by the failure.

The fire service said it was not yet clear whether the blackout was a result of earlier flooding in Old Swan caused by a massive sink hole on Green Lane.

Residents were left shocked and saddened by the scenes overnight with many taking to Twitter to voice their concerns.

Katherine Hughes tweeted: "No water in L7 and L8, no power in L6 and a sinkhole in Old Swan. Liverpool falling to bits in one night."

Terry Rogan tweeted: "Believe it or not, Old Swan has collapsed again. I can't believe they've only recently fixed it."

Lauren Maher tweeted: "There’s a huge burst pipe in Old Swan…looks really bad! Also a power cut in Kensington! Don’t think it’s gonna be a quick fix."
