Major fire breaks out at historic former army centre in Paisley

A major fire has broken out at a former Territorial Army Centre in Paisley.

Fire crews were called to the vacant building on High Street around 3.30pm on Wednesday.

The historic building sits near the University of the West of Scotland campus and the Coats observatory.

Traffic diversions are currently in place at New Street, which is closed at the junctions with Causeyside Street and Shuttle Street.

Renfrewshire Council has advised members of the public to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "SFRS were called about 3.30pm to reports of a fire at a vacant building.

"Three appliances are currently on the scene where crews are working to extinguish the fire."
