Major fire at Swansea's Old Boys' Club described as 'absolutely massive'

A large fire has broken out at the old abandoned Boys' Club in Swansea.

The blaze started at around 8.15pm on Thursday firefighters remained at the scene late on Thursday night with flames and smoke billowing into the air visible across the city.

One nearby resident, who asked to be named only as Dave, said: "When I noticed it I could see it was absolutely massive. The flames were really, really big.

"Emergency services turned up pretty quickly. I live on Matthew Street and all I can see from my window is a massive cloud of smoke – it's still burning quite a lot."

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said lots of firefighters were at the scene with cranes in place to put out the fire.

The resident said a number of roads had been blocked off and a number of people were gathered around watching. It is understood that the roof of the building has collapsed.

A spokeswoman from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were called to the scene at 8.15pm.

She added: "Three fire engines are at the scene as well as one water carrier. It is ongoing."

The 1920s building, which is perched high above Swansea city  in Mayhill, originally opened as a successful youth club until its closure in the mid-1990s. Earlier this year plans were lodged to turn the building into a 23-unit residential development. Go here to see what the proposed flats would look like.
