Major fire at sports pavilion Fishponds 'thought to be deliberate'

A sports pavilion roof in Bristol suffered severe damage in a fire - believed to have been started deliberately.

Avon Fire and Rescue firefighters from Southmead, Kingswood and Temple were all called to Oldbury Court Road in Fishponds at around 11pm last night (March 29).

On arrival, they tackled the blaze, which caused damage to the building's roof, by using three hose reels and a turntable ladder.

Crews returned to the scene this morning (March 30) for inspection and determined it was likely to be the result of an arson attack.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Crews from Southmead, Kingswood and Temple fire stations were mobilised to reports of a fire.

"On arrival, firefighters found a pavilion with its roof well alight.

"Crews used two 45mm jets, three hose reels and a turntable ladder to extinguish the fire.

"Police and Bristol City Council were also in attendance.

"Crews returned the morning after for reinspection with thermal imaging cameras.

"The cause is thought to be deliberate."
