Major fire at Heads of Valley industrial estate as plumes of smoke seen for miles and people told to stay indoors

People living near a valleys industrial estate have been told to keep their doors and windows closed after a major fire on Friday night.

Numerous fire crews were sent to the Heads of Valley Industrial Estate, Rhymney in the early hours of Saturday.

On Saturday morning, a large thick plume of black smoke could still be seen at first light. The industrial estate is around one mile north-west of Rhymney and only four miles east of Merthyr Tydfil.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said 96 people had called them about the fire at a recycling factory, which started at around 1.30am.

The fire service sent eight appliances along with three aerial platforms and two water bowsers.

On Saturday morning, four engines remained at the scene while a spokesman for the service said: "Due to the smoke plume from the ongoing incident, we are advising residents in the area to keep their doors and windows closed."
