Major fire at empty old people's home in Lawrence Weston near M5 'started deliberately'

A major fire at an empty old people’s home in Lawrence Weston is believed to have been started deliberately.

Firefighters from across the city rushed to the former Rockwell elderly people’s home yesterday evening to tackle the blaze.

The enormous plume of smoke from the fire could be seen across Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston and from the M5 motorway.

Pictures taken today (June 26) show a police cordon in place around the vacant, burnt-out building.

The old people’s home in Corbet Close has been closed and boarded up for a number of years.

Avon Fire and Rescue said the cause of the fire is "thought to be deliberate".

"Crews from Avonmouth, Southmead, Temple, Portishead & Bedminster fire stations, along with a turntable ladder, were called to a fire in the roof area of a vacant building," a fire service spokesman said.

"On arrival, firefighters used five breathing apparatus for safety and two 45mm jets and two hoses to tackle the fire.

"The cause is thought to be deliberate and police were also in attendance."
