Major engineering work to hit train lines on Eurovision weekend

Major engineering work is set to hit the rail network on the weekend the Eurovision Song Contest is held in Liverpool.

Network Rail is planning to carry out works on the line that connects London and Liverpool between May 13 and 14 this year. The works will impact the Avanti West Coast network, which runs from the capital to Liverpool and Manchester via Birmingham.

According to the National Rail website, the planned works will also impact the London Northwestern Railway operator between London Euston, Birmingham and Crewe and the London Overground between Euston and Watford Junction.

The message from National Rail says "it is not yet known how Avanti West Coast or London Northwestern Railway" will be affected by the engineering work and that passengers are advised to check before they travel.

The news will obviously be a concern for those hoping to head to Liverpool for the Eurovision Song Contest. The event begins in the city starts on May 9 and the grand final will take place on Saturday May 13.

Avanti West Coast has since confirmed that its services to Liverpool will not be affected by the work.

News of the planned works was first raised on social media by TV critic Scott Bryan, who tweets regularly about Eurovision.

Sharing a screengrab of the planned works, He said: "Gulp. Network Rail has announced engineering works on the Avanti West Coast and North Western Railyway on Eurovision weekend. It is not yet known how Avanti or London Northwestern Railway will be affected by this engineering work."

He added: "So far it hasn't been confirmed whether the lines will be affected, only that there is engineering work confirmed for that weekend. You would have thought that with a major event taking place in Liverpool, such an important transport line to London would be protected."

Huge numbers of people are expected to travel into Liverpool around the time of Eurovision, which is being held at the city's arena and convention complex. Liverpool won the right to host the global event after ousting Glasgow last year.

The UK is hosting Eurovision on on behalf of Ukraine, which won last year's competition but cannot host because of the ongoing Russian invasion.
