Major emergency services search for man missing in river

A search effort to find a man thought to have entered the waters of a freezing river has entered its second day. Police, fire and mountain rescue teams combed the banks and searched the waters of Afon Mawddach at Ganllwyd, near Dolgellau on Friday and throughout Christmas Eve.

The man is thought to have gone into the river close to Tyn y Groes, close to Coed y Brenin mountain park, just off the A470. Police have confirmed that officers remain at the scene today.

North Wales Live reported that rescue teams were focused around Llanelltyd Bridge which runs over the Mawddach assisted by a helicopter. Gwynedd councillor Delyth Lloyd Griffiths, who represents Llanfachreth and Ganllwyd praised the efforts of the emergency teams.

Cllr Griffiths said they were working in challenging conditions with the river levels high as a result of recent heavy rain. The waters would be freezing cold as well, she added.

"They have been making all efforts to look for somebody. They have been helped by the local mountain rescue and a specialist marine unit from Runcorn who have been here for many, many hours now."

Cllr Griffiths said she believed police "had information about someone entering the water at this location last night".

A North Wales Police spokesperson confirmed tonight that it had been working with Snowdonia Mountain Rescue Team, National Police Air Service, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and Welsh Ambulance Service have been in the Ganllwyd area near Dolgellau since around 4.15pm yesterday.

"They are carrying out a search of the river Mawddach following reports of a person who had entered the water. Local searches have now concluded, while further specialist searches will continue", the spokesperson added.
