Major emergency services response to serious crash between two cars and a van

A serious crash between two cars and a van closed a major city road prompting a major emergency service response.

Fire crews , paramedics and police officers were called to the scene on Gainsborough Road, at the junction of Wellington Road in Toxteth , shortly before 4pm to reports of a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Road closures were quickly put in place as firefighters reportedly worked to free a number of drivers and passengers from their vehicles.

A VW Golf, Mercedes Vito and a Ford Focus Zetec were all left with significant damage in the crash and it is believed that at least one person was taken to hospital after the crash.

Pictures taken at the scene show a large police cordon around the crash site.

A witness to the crash told the ECHO: "A driver's face was swollen and bleeding on him.

"A passenger had to have the hydraulic on the car to get him out and the other driver had his leg stuck.

"This is the second crash in matter of weeks in this area. Someone is going to be killed if no traffic lights or a crossing is put in place."

Merseyside Police confirmed that a man suffered facial injuries during the crash but the condition of the other passengers is not clear.

In a statement, the force said: "We received a call at around 3.40pm reporting a collision on Gainsborough Road near the junction with Wellington Road, involving a VW Golf, Mercedes Vito and a Ford Focus Zetec.

"One man sustained a facial injury but the seriousness of this is not yet known.

"Road closures are in place from the junction with Garmoyle Road."
