Major emergency response after 85-year-old man collapses on Irish mountain

Gardai, mountain rescue teams and an ambulance were called in after an elderly man collapsed on Slieve Bloom on Saturday.

The man, aged 85, was out walking in the mountainous area of Laois with his family at 2:30pm when he collapsed suddenly.

Emergency services were alerted and multiple teams headed to give the man assistance.

The man was treated on scene by the National Ambulance Service and was able to walk out to the car park by himself.

Gardai thanked those involved in the emergency operation and ensuring a happy outcome in this particular incident.

A garda spokesperson said: " Our colleagues received a call to attend Monicknew Wood, Slieve Bloom Environmental Park today. A gentleman had got into difficulties when out walking with his family. Portlaoise Gardaí and Laois Roads Policing Unit went to the call.

"They assisted South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association, Laois County Fire & Rescue Service, Laois Civil-Defence and National Ambulance Service (NAS) paramedics.

"The gentleman made it back safely to his family."
