Major emergency rescue responses launched on both sides of the Mersey

A massive emergency services presence was called to Princes Dock in the city centre last night after the concern for safety of a man.

Merseyside Police, the fire service boat Marine Fire One, Wirral coastguard and New Brighton lifeboat were all called to the scene after reports of a man "on the wrong side of the barrier" near Malmaison Hotel.

The 28-year-old man was spoken to by an officer and eventually was brought to safety shortly after 11pm.

He was checked over by an ambulance crew and voluntarily attended the Royal Liverpool hospital.

On the way back from this incident, the Wirral Coastguard Resue Team and New Brighton lifeboat crew were mobilised to a person entering the River Mersey near to Manor Groyne in New Brighton.

As the team approached the scene, an update was received that the person had left the water and was now on the promenade.

New Brighton Lifeboat's tractor spotted the person and was able to guide in Coastguard Rescue Officers.

The person was given a precautionary check on scene before being taken to hospital.

Merseyside Police also attended the incident.

If you see someone in trouble on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
