Major disruption in Leeds causing heavy delays for rail passengers to and from Newcastle

Major disruption at Leeds railway station has caused massive delays for rail passengers travelling to and from Newcastle Central Station .

The station was closed on Thursday morning as a result of a "vulnerable trespasser" on the railway lines.

Thousands of commuters had their journeys disrupted as Network Rail confirmed power to the overhead electric wires was shut off at about 7.30am.

British Transport Police confirmed the man was "safely removed from harm's way" at 9.30am, but passengers have been warned "major disruption" is expected until at least 4pm.

Transpennine Express and CrossCountry services to and from Newcastle are among those to have been affected by the closure.

Advice published on Network Rail's website reads: "All lines have now reopened following a trespasser on the railway at Leeds station.

"Staff are working hard to ensure all the trapped trains are able to exit the platforms before further services enter the station.

"Trains will continue to be severely disrupted with delays of up to 180 minutes, cancellations and diversions.

"Customers are advised to delay travelling until later today if possible. Please ensure you check before travelling.

"Major disruption is expected until at least 16:00."
