'Major disruption' at Wigan North Western sees trains cancelled and delayed for over an hour

A fault at Wigan North Western railway station is causing 'major disruption' - with trains being cancelled and delayed by up to 70 minutes.

National Rail Inquiries has said that the disruption, which was first reported just before 10am, is caused by a signalling problem.

It's expected to last until 4pm.

It's impacting Avanti West Coast, Northern, and TransPennine Express services.

Northern said in a Tweet: "Due to a fault with the signalling system at Wigan North Western all lines are disrupted."

Avanti has requested that replacement road transport runs between Preston, Wigan North Western, Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe.

Northern has advised its customers that they can use their tickets on Metrolink services from Manchester City Centre to Patricroft/ Eccles, Ashton, Manchester Airport and Altrincham in both directions.

National Rail said: "Please be advised, journey times will be extended up to two hours when using road replacement transport."
