Major disruption ahead as three-month roadworks start today on Pollokshaws Road

A series of improvement works are set to begin on busy south side from today - meaning major disruption for pedestrians, bikes and road users.

As reported by Glasgow Live earlier last week, the three month project is the first stage in a £20m upgrade of the city's electricity network set to continue into 2023.

From today (February 10) until May, Pollokshaws Road will be closed to all pedestrians, cars and cyclists between Gourock Street and Devon Street.

Turriff Street will also be closed off completely to road users throughout that period, while Devon Street will be inaccessible from March - May.

Eglinton Street will be open with staged lane closures from March until May.

Craig Arthur, Distribution Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “We’re proud to be powering Glasgow’s future through this £20million investment project.

"I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and support while we work to modernise their electricity network. This investment will provide long term benefits to support the transition to a low carbon community to help Glasgow become the UK’s first Net Zero City.”

The next phase of the project will include works in the Gorbals, Govanhill, Pollokshields, Tradeston, Cessnock, Kinning Park, Govan and Ibrox.

They will be focusing on more than 55 miles of cabling and four substations across the southside between 2020 and 2023.

As the city’s electricity distributor, SP Energy Networks will reinforce the network from Govan to the new riverside Buchanan Wharf development in Tradeston.

And bosses say "every effort will be made to minimise disruption caused by the upgrade works"

A dedicated web page is available to provide the public with ongoing information and updates on any road closures and how these works may affect them.
