Major differences between Tier 4 and Tier 3 as more areas face harsh restrictions

The tier review is set to take place this week, with many areas of England facing being put into the strictest Tier 4 measures.

Tier 4 was implemented by the government in an effort to stop the spread of the new highly infectious coronavirus strain.

London and large parts of the South are currently under the harshest restrictions after cases rocketed in those areas.

But as cases begin to rise in lots of other parts of England more areas could be placed into Tier 4, with reports a full lockdown could also be implemented.

Liverpool is currently in Tier 2, having previously being in Tier 3, but cases are now on the rise again in the city.

The government is expected to announce its latest tier review by December 30, and at least 24 areas have been identified as at risk of stricter restrictions, due to spiralling infection rates. They include Eden in Cumbria, Carlisle and Lancashire Burnley.

Ahead of the tier review tomorrow we looked at the main differences between Tier 3 and Tier 4.

Stay at home message

People in Tier 4 are only allowed to leave their home for essential reasons similar to the first lockdown.

Those in Tier 3 are discouraged from leaving their home, but they are allowed to visit covid-safe venues and non-essential shops.

In both tiers people are allowed to enjoy unlimited exercise outside.

Meeting people outside your household

In Tier 4 you are only allowed to meet one other person outside your household in an outdoor public space.

In Tier 3 you are allowed to meet six people outside in a public place.

In both tiers indoor mixing is banned in any setting.

Non-essential shops

Non-essential shops such as clothes store and homeware stores are allowed to stay open in Tier 3.

But in Tier 4 only essential shops are allowed to open, like in the first lockdown.

Essential businesses include supermarkets, hardware stores, garden centres, banks, post offices, pet shops, petrol stations and pharmacies.

Hairdressers, beauticians and personal care

In Tier 3 hairdressers, beauty salons and barbers are all allowed to remain open, if they have covid safety procedures in place.

Gyms are also allowed to open in Tier 3 for individual exercise.

In Tier 4 all of the above are forced to close.
