Major defence contractor plans to cut jobs at Scottish MoD site

A DEFENCE contractor is reportedly consulting its staff at sites in Scotland and Wales on plans to cut 23 jobs.

QinetiQ, a defence technology company headquartered in Hampshire, is reportedly planning on axing a number of jobs at a weapons testing range in the Western Isles at MoD Hebrides.

According to BBC News, the majority of roles that are in talks of being lost at a military testing range in Cardigan Bay in west Wales run by MoD Aberporth.

Both sites are used for testing a number of different weapons, including missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

It is unclear how many roles at each site are at risk, but BBC News has reported that the overall number of jobs on the line is 23.

A QinetiQ spokesperson told BBC News: “Like all companies, we continuously review our business to ensure we're meeting our customers' requirements in the most effective way.

“We've identified some proposed changes and are engaged in individual and collective consultation with impacted employees.”

The news comes after BAE Systems announced last week that dozens of jobs are at risk in Scotland, just weeks after a £10 billion warship deal was struck.

Staff in Govan and Scotstoun were told there would be an organisational overhaul of the naval ships arm of the business.

The Times reported at the time that 116 roles are under threat across the UK, with staff for the weapons firm claiming that no one saw the announcement coming.

Last month, Norway placed a £10bn order for Type 26 frigates, designed for anti-submarine warfare, at the Glasgow yard.

At the time, the UK Government said the deal would support 2000 jobs at BAE Systems Glasgow shipyards “well into the 2030s”.
