Major coronavirus decision set to be made by EFL that will affect Bristol City, Leeds United and rest of Championship

The EFL are expected to follow the lead of the Premier League and call a suspension of this weekend's fixtures, which could be extended for up to four weeks.

According to multiple reports the confirmation is due on Friday morning following the revelation on Thursday night that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had tested positive for Covid-19, with their match against Brighton & Hove Albion promptly called off.

In the EFL, Portsmouth's squad are self-isolating and their match against Accrington Stanley has reportedly been called off while Peterborough owner Darragh Macanthony has requested for their League One fixture to be cancelled.

Bristol City are due to play Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park but that game looks unlikely to be played, despite assurances on Thursday night, in light of the government's comments that it would go ahead.

It's understood the Robins have prepared as they always would, 24 hours before a matchday, but are awaiting updates and further direction from the EFL.

The governing body are holding an emergency club meeting regarding future fixtures amid the coronavirus outbreak and are likely to follow whatever decision is made by the Premier League who are holding their own meeting.

Since Arteta's diagnosis, Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi have tested positive for COVID-19, while Portsmouth have been forced to self-isolate after facing the Gunners in the FA Cup last week.

A statement from the EFL this morning said: “The EFL Board will meet this morning to make a decision on this weekend’s fixtures and beyond.”

The Premier League are to hold an emergency meeting this morning, following the news about Arteta and Hudson-Odoi, with Everton and Bournemouth also revealing they have players self-isolating.

But the BBC claim a “suspension of several weeks (is) most likely, to take in the international break” for the Premier League, with “abandonment unlikely at this stage”.

And they add it is understood “that the EFL are likely to follow the same course of action as the Premier League - ie a suspension”.

UEFA have suspended all Champions League fixtures next week and Ligue 1 and 2 have also temporarily halted their season due to the outbreak.
