Major road closures ahead as Charing Cross tunnel undergoes 'icephobic' roadworks ahead of winter

A closure of a busy stretch of the M8 will begin on Sunday.

Charing Cross tunnel will be closed 10pm until 6am over the next three weeks.

The project will install a new icephobic coating on the road to help tackle the potential for icicles forming under extreme cold temperatures.

Brian Laurie, Scotland TranServ’s Network Bridges Manager added: “This innovative coating helps to repel ice or more accurately prevent ice formation. The technology is already being used to prevent ice build-up on aircraft and wind turbines.

"We will need to monitor the performance of this coating over a number of winters in order to identify its success, potentially extending its use at other locations.”

Brian Coyle, Scotland TranServ’s Assistant Network Bridges Engineer said: “The extreme temperatures of recent winters led to a number of issues with icicles forming on the underside of the Charing Cross tunnel.

"On several occasions, it was necessary for our Operations team to close the motorway in order to clear the forming ice from the roof and protect the health and safety of drivers."

Works will take place starting westbound from Sunday (August 19) and will switch to eastbound for the second half of the programme.

The three week plan will see local diversions in operation overnight. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
