Major clear-up operation in Isle of Man after flooding hits island with six foot torrents

A major clear-up operation is beginning in the Isle of Man after a river burst its banks, trapping residents in their homes.

Heavy rain badly affected the village of Laxey, where the worst of the flooding occurred as up to six foot of floodwater rushed down the road, sweeping several vehicles away.

Residents in at least three properties in the village - which is on the east of the island and north of the capital Douglas - were trapped in their homes while others were told to stay indoors.

The Isle of Man constabulary declared a major incident after the flash floods. A helicopter was brought in to help people who were stranded in their homes.

It came as the Met Office issued severe weather warnings, with some regions hit by the equivalent of more than two weeks' of rain in less than an hour on Tuesday.

A fire engine and civil defence vehicle and a volunteer emergency response service was launched.

Police warned residents on the island to avoid all but "urgent travel" as a landslip was reported on a mountain road.

A digger was almost knocked over by the force of the floodwater, which police said had swept several vehicles away.

A rest centre has been set up and temporary accommodation arranged for those who need it.

Some schools were closed on Tuesday as a result of the flooding.

On Twitter, the Institution of Civil Engineers Lancashire (incorporating the Isle of Man) wrote: "Our thoughts go out to the people of Laxey and other parts of the Isle of Man affected by flooding.

"Hopefully #CivilEngineers can help with recovery and perhaps find solutions to protect against future events."

And Julie Graham tweeted on Tuesday: "Coastguard helicopter on Laxey football pitch. Horrendous conditions, river has burst it's banks, people trapped in their houses. The emergency services are doing an amazing job."

Laxey is the fourth largest village on the Isle of Man. The island has a population of around 83,000 people.
