Major city road closed for hours after man climbs onto roof

A major city road was closed for almost three hours after a man climbed onto the roof of a house.

Emergency services were called to Princes Road in Toxteth at 3.30pmn on Thursday to reports of concern for the safety of a man.

Road closures were quickly put in place by police as fire fighters and specialist paramedics also arrived at the scene to help bring the man down safely.

A cordon was also placed around the scene, also blocking traffic on Princes Avenue.

Witnesses told the ECHO that a man was stood on top of a house that had been converted to flats and was speaking with officers on the ground and through an open window.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are currently in Toxteth following reports of concern for the safety of a man this afternoon, Thursday, 9 January.

"Officers were called at around 3.30pm to an address in Princes Road.

"The road has been closed and a police negotiator is in attendance.

"Members of the public are advised to avoid the area."

The man reportedly came down from the roof of the building at 6pm and was inside the house with officers.
