Major city centre roads closed due to massive police incident

A number of major city centre roads were closed last night due to a massive police incident.

Emergency services attended an incident on the walkway over Byrom Street and Hunter Street, close to the Churchill Flyover.

Drivers in the area reported being trapped in queues of traffic on the roads around the incident that is believed to have been ongoing since shortly after 9pm, and the city is experiencing tailbacks around the scene.

Access to both the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels were affected and a number of people reported delays and queues on Scotland Road, Islington, Great Crosshall Street and Victoria Street.

A large number of police officers were seen on the walkway and blocking traffic from all directions.

Fire crews and paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance at the incident to assist police.

It is believed the roads were cleared by around 11pm last night. The Echo is waiting for official confirmation of what caused the response.
