A major city centre road has been blocked off after a sinkhole opened up in the middle of the street.
Dale Street was closed by workers at around 7pm after the large hole appeared shortly after rush hour .
The slip road from Byrom Street towards Dale Street and Water Street was then blocked off with traffic cones and plastic barriers.
Pictures and video taken at the scene show how the hole opened just outside The Excelsior pub on Johnson Street.
It is not yet known how long the road will be blocked off for but Merseyside Police and council engineers are currently at the scene.
Liverpool City Council confirmed that contractors would be working over the weekend to repair it.
In a tweet they said: "Part of Dale Street from the Birkenhead Tunnel entrance to Crosshall Street is closed due to a hole in the road.
"Contractors will be on site over the weekend to repair it."
