Major changes to bin collections announced by Leeds City Council

The coronavirus pandemic has forced Leeds City Council to make changes to its bin collections across the city.

The prime minister outlined strict new measures during a public broadcast on Monday, March 23, in which he outlined that all non-essential shops should be closed and people should only leave the house for a select few reasons.

This includes to buy food or medicine, to exercise once a day and to travel to work - but only if your job cannot be done from home.

In order to comply with the new guidelines, Leeds City Council has confirmed that all waste sites will be closed immediately.

The local authority is also suspending the collection of brown garden waste bins for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, no public bins will be emptied under the new proposals, so people are being asked to take their litter home with them and put it in their own bins.

As things stand, there are no changes to the regular black and green bin collection dates. They will still be collected as normal.

“The council is reiterating the importance of following the instructions laid down by the prime minister in order to stop the spread of coronavirus,” said a message on the Leeds City Council website.

“Further updates will be given over the coming day about any other services that might be affected.”

All community libraries and hubs will also be closed from today onwards, although people can still get in touch to access services via telephone by calling 0113 222 4444. However, people are being warned that “lines will be very busy” so you may have to hold to speak to someone.
