Major change for Dublin drivers as cars to be banned from busy road

There is to be a major change for Dublin drivers from Monday as one of the main roads that connects the northside to the city centre will close to traffic.

Cars will be banned from driving inbound on the North Strand Road from Fairview to the Five Lamps until early 2024.

This is to facilitate the building of a new Clontarf to City Centre cycle lane which is part of a €62.5 million project.

However, the road closure will not affect buses, taxis, cyclists and the opposite side of the road will remain open to outbound traffic leaving the city centre.

Drivers will be diverted at Fairview Strand, down Ballybough Road and along Portland Row, before re-joining the North Strand Road at Five Lamps.

The building of the cycle lane has already split opinion with one local business in Fairview closing earlier this year because its customers no longer have anywhere to park.

Local Councillor Nial Ring said residents are "up in arms" about the latest changes which he said would leave people in the north inner city "trapped in their homes".

Dublin City Council is warning that the project is likely to cause traffic disruption and increased journey times in the area, especially during peak hours on the diverted routes.

When completed the Clontarf to City Centre project will provide segregated cycling facilities and bus priority infrastructure along a 2.7km route from Clontarf to Amiens Street in Dublin's city centre.

The council says this will facilitate faster bus journeys, safer and easier cycling and driving options and comfortable walking and running facilities.
