Major change for Covid rules across England today, but some rules remain

Coronavirus restrictions across England will largely be scrapped today, Thursday, January 27, with the end of Covid Plan B.

From today it will no longer be mandatory to wear masks in shops and other public places, or on public transport, and you will no longer need to use a Covid passport or prove your vaccination status to access to events and venues in England.

Work from home guidance and masks in schools were already scrapped last week.

Restrictions on visiting care homes will also be eased.

But some rules remain in place. Along with self-isolating for at least five full days if you get a positive Covid test, the requirement to take lateral flow tests when travelling internationally will remain in place for now.

The Prime Minister has indicated that both those rules will end within weeks.

For now, anyone planning to travel abroad need to book and pay for a Covid test before coming back to England - although this will change on February 11 from 4am if you're double-vaccinated.

From now until then the test - either lateral flow or PCR - will have to be taken after you arrive back.

If the test comes back positive, you need to self-isolate. Those who aren't fully vaccinated need to book and pay for day two and day eight tests. You will also have to quarantine at home or the place you're staying for 10 full days.

If you've been fully vaccinated then you don't need to isolate for 10 days unless you test positive on or before day two.

Everyone also needs to complete a passenger locator form before travelling back to the UK.

In addition a number of venues and retailers have said they will continue to require people to ear masks or to prove their Covid status.

While this is no longer law, businesses are entitled to request it.
