Major bus route returns after repairs to stop yobs throwing things off the bridge

A major bus route has returned to a Merseyside area after operators were forced to divert services following antisocial behaviour.

Earlier this year, Arriva North West suspended the 76 bus service for several days after bricks were thrown from the railway bridge over Lydiate Lane, Halewood.

The service was eventually reinstated after council staff and police officers removed debris that had been piled up as “ammunition” by the railway bridge.

However, the service was once again diverted away from the Okell Drive area after more anti-social behaviour saw a concrete slab thrown at a driver's windscreen.

Work has now been completed on the bridge, increasing safety measures such as fencing off access.

Due to these increased measures, the 76 service has now resumed in the area from November 10.

Halewood Branch Labour Party wrote on Facebook: "Your Labour Councillors can report that the works on the Bridge on Lydiate Lane have now been completed by Knowsley Council and Merseytravel and we are happy to have been notified that the 76 service will recommence from Wednesday 10th November."

Independent councillor Joanne Harvey, for Halewood South, has been campaigning for better bus services in the town after people are left 'stranded'.

She said she is pleased to see this improvement work has been completed and it 'will be good to see the 76 go this way again'.

Arriva North West said: "The works on the bridge over Lydiate Lane have been completed and service 76 is now back on normal route."
