Major bus route diverted after yobs damage vehicles

One of Merseyside’s main bus operators were forced to divert services after vandals damaged their vehicles.

Arriva North West said it had taken the decision to divert the 76 bus service through Lydiate Lane, Halewood, after the attacks.

The 76 has been diverted after 7pm via Higher Road until further notice.

In a Tweet, Arriva said: “76 Halewood. To confirm, from first bus of a morning until 19:00 hours, route 76 will operate via Lydiate Lane, Okell Drive & Hollies Lane. Due to damage to vehicles of an evening after 19:00 hours the service will not be able to serve the above locations.”

Arriva confirmed a number of incidents of antisocial behaviour during the evening and said they will not tolerate any inappropriate behaviour.

An Arriva spokesperson said: “We have had a number of instances of antisocial behaviour during the evening at Lydiate Lane Halewood on our service 76, due to this we have taken the decision to divert the service after 7pm via Higher Road and this will be until further notice.

“We do not tolerate any incidents of antisocial behaviour. We are working closely with Travel-Safe and the local councillors to try and alleviate the poor behaviour, all incidents have been reported to the police and CCTV has been downloaded.”

The incidents of antisocial behaviour and damage to Arriva vehicles have been reported to Merseyside Police.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that officers are investigating reports of bricks being thrown from a bridge in Halewood on Sunday, 14 March.

At around 9.50pm, it was reported that youths were throwing bricks from a bridge on Lydiate Lane. It is not believed that anyone was hurt in the incident. CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing.2

Community Policing Inspector Peter Rexwinkel said: “This type of senseless behaviour is a criminal act and could cause serious injury - or worse - to an innocent member of the public.

"We're keen to hear from anyone who saw this incident and has any information about anti-social behaviour in the Halewood area recently.

"Our enquiries are ongoing, and we’ll act on any information received to find those responsible.”
