Major bridge in Pontypridd to be closed to traffic for nearly two weeks

Pontypridd 's White Bridge will be closed to traffic again to enable essential repairs.

The trial repairs will take place over two weeks of daytime works from November 15.

Berw Road Bridge, locally known as the White Bridge, was severely damaged during Storm Dennis in February 2020 and remained closed for over a year.

Earlier this year Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) County Borough Council confirmed it was working towards a two-phase repair scheme. You can read more about that here.

The structure re-opened to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in September following initial scour repairs, resulting from damage sustained during Storm Dennis.

Structural assessments previously confirmed that the bridge is capable of dealing with similar loads to those it carried before the storm damage (7.5T), but it's now set to close again during the daytime for nearly two weeks.

When the bridge re-opened, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council confirmed further trial repairs would be needed on the main structure to inform the development of a major repair programme scheduled for summer 2022.

This additional work will be completed working closely with Cadw to secure the bridge’s future.

When will the repairs take place?

The trial repairs will begin from Monday, November 15, and will see the bridge closed to motorists.

The bridge will however maintain pedestrian access.

The work will only take place during the daytime and on weekdays. This means the bridge will close to traffic from 9.30am to 3pm from Monday to Friday (for 10 days in total) up to November 26.

What else do I need to know?

The council may require a lane closure on The Parade to allow for site compound positions.

Once confirmed the details about this will be communicated to local residents.
