Police say a major blast heard in Paris was a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier.

The sounds reverberated over the entire city, with eyewitnesses reporting their buildings rocking.

Residents from several central districts, as well as in nearby suburbs, reported hearing the blast.

Paris police later said on Twitter that the noise was a sonic boom.

Officers have asked people to stop calling them to report the noise.

Residents questioned what the noise wrote.

One resident said: "Explosion or very loud bang just heard in central Paris. No idea what it might have been."
