Nationwide is strengthening its presence in Glasgow with a major investment in new office space that will become the building society’s Scottish headquarters.
The organisation has confirmed plans to take over additional floors at 177 Bothwell Street, the former headquarters of Virgin Money, which will be rebranded as Nationwide later this year.
The move will create a central hub for Nationwide’s business banking growth in Scotland, with the new base expected to accommodate around 3000 employees.
Nationwide will take over five floors of the building from spring 2027.
Dame Debbie Crosbie, chief executive of Nationwide Building Society, said Scotland would play a key role in the organisation’s future growth.
“Scotland is central to Nationwide’s future growth and our Bothwell Street office is at its heart,” she said.
“We are already connected to a large number of families and businesses in Scotland and we’re looking forward to bringing the benefits of the UK’s biggest building society and largest branch network to even more Scottish communities.”
The Bothwell Street building is among Glasgow’s most environmentally advanced office spaces, powered by 100% renewable energy from a South Lanarkshire wind farm and operating with zero-carbon emissions.
The building also features a 150-metre rooftop running track and panoramic views across the city centre.
Following Nationwide’s acquisition of Virgin Money in October 2024, the organisation now serves around 1.1 million customers in Scotland.
Its Scottish customer base includes one in five current accounts and first-time buyer mortgages, while Nationwide holds around 20% of the personal savings market in the country.
Stephen Flynn, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport, welcomed the investment, saying Glasgow’s reputation as a financial centre made it a strong location for Nationwide’s expanded operations.
He said: “I am delighted Nationwide is making Bothwell Street home of its Scottish operations, investing in the people and the place to support future growth and innovation.”
Nationwide currently operates 80 branches across Scotland, including 44 of its own locations and 36 former Virgin Money branches. All branches are guaranteed to remain open until at least 2030.
The building society says its branch network will continue to provide community support alongside traditional banking services.
