Major Asian country introduces new strict measures to tackle Ebola

  • Thailand has implemented stricter Ebola screening for individuals arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda , including a mandatory 21-day quarantine for asymptomatic travellers.
  • These measures were introduced after the World Health Organisation declared the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola , which lacks an approved vaccine or treatment, a public health emergency of global concern on 17 May.
  • The Department of Disease Control in Thailand has since classified Congo and Uganda as Ebola-affected zones, with 10 asymptomatic travellers already quarantined as a preventative step.
  • The Ebola outbreak in Congo is reportedly worsening, with over 900 suspected cases identified, prompting several countries to enhance surveillance.
  • Tragically, three Red Cross volunteers died in Congo after contracting Ebola, likely during dead body management activities in March before the current outbreak was officially identified.
