Major announcement made over Liverpool River of Light fireworks display 2020

A final decision has been made by the council over Liverpool's Bonfire Night celebrations.

Culture Liverpool, the team behind some of the city's biggest and most successful events, has been looking carefully at each city council-run event and whether it can go ahead safely.

In a statement, the council has said that Liverpool's River of Light fireworks display has been cancelled this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The decision has been made as part of a constant review of the city's busy 2020 events calendar.

The River of Light fireworks display has taken place along Liverpool's waterfront for the last four years as an alternative to organised displays in Sefton Park and Newsham Park.

Each year, hundreds of people pack out both sides of the River Mersey for the amazing musical fireworks show.

However, this year this will not happen over concerns about the growing coronavirus cases in the city.

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: "There will be no official fireworks display taking place in the city this year as there are concerns around large crowds gathering in one place.

"Following last year's success, the team is still looking at the option of installing a number of light installations across the waterfront in a Covid-safe way. A decision will be made in the next couple of weeks."
