A MAJOR airline has launched new flights from Glasgow Airport to one of Europe's most “sought-after” winter destinations that is renowned for its Arctic landscapes and its Northern Lights views.
Norwegian has announced a new route to Tromsø in Northern Norway from the Scottish airport starting on December 11 and running until March 2027.
The new route will operate twice weekly throughout the winter season, with flights on Mondays and Fridays, as it offers Scottish holidaymakers the opportunity to experience the “spectacular” Arctic winter that Northern Norway can offer.
Tromsø is best known as the gateway to the Arctic and is located on the island of Tromsøya, just off Norway's mainland.
It is surrounded by mountains and is home to the Arctic Cathedral and the Polar Museum, which tells the stories of explorer Willem Barentsz’s first encounter with a polar bear.
Tromsø is also renowned for its views of the Northern Lights and offers holidaymakers the chance to explore the Arctic landscape via dog sledges.
Chris Tibbett, Executive Director – Commercial Aviation & Marketing, AGS Airports, welcomed the new service between Glasgow and Tromsø, adding that it will help further strengthen Scotland's “connectivity” with Norway.
He said: “Tromsø has become one of Europe's most sought-after winter destinations, renowned for its spectacular Arctic landscapes, Northern Lights experiences and unique outdoor adventures.
“This new route will make it easier than ever for travellers from across Scotland to experience everything the region has to offer.
“We are proud of our partnership with Norwegian and look forward to supporting the success of this service when it launches in winter.”
Meanwhile, Magnus Thome Maursund, chief commercial officer at Norwegian, said that he believes the route will also prove popular with Norwegian travellers.
He said: “Glasgow is a vibrant destination renowned for its warm hospitality, thriving music and cultural scene, and as the perfect gateway to the breathtaking Scottish Highlands.
“With a direct flight, it's now even easier for our Norwegian customers to enjoy everything Scotland has to offer, whether it's a city break or a longer touring holiday.”
Maursund added: “We're seeing growing interest from Scottish travellers looking for authentic Arctic winter experiences, from witnessing the Northern Lights to whale watching and exploring the stunning landscapes of Northern Norway. This new service makes those experiences more accessible than ever.”
