Major air and sea rescue after five get into difficulty in water near Barry Island

Five people have been rescued by lifeguards after getting into trouble in the water near Barry Island during the August Bank Holiday - August 29. One is in hospital following the dramatic rescue on Monday afternoon, which prompted a multi-agency response.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident off Friars Point after a member of the public made a 999 call at 4.45pm. The coastguard, RNLI lifeboats and lifeguards from Whitmore Bay were all sent to help, while South Wales Police and the coastguard helicopter were also in attendance.

After being rescued, one person was flown to hospital via helicopter for further treatment. Their condition is not known.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "Barry coastguard rescue team and RNLI lifeboats, Whitmore Bay RNLI lifeguards, South Wales Police and the coastguard helicopter from St Athan were sent to help five people struggling in the water off Friars Point, following a 999 call from a member of the public at 4.45pm today (August 29).

They added: "The lifeguards rescued the five people and returned them to shore, with one person taken to hospital for onward treatment by the helicopter."
